Divided the sound capturing into 4 zones.
4. go the location in different time and captuing its changes.

Sonic Art Project Update

1. The narration of the program of a day can be kind of Repetion itself. The jiggle and the news of specific time, you can hear somehting repeatly. For a day, for a week and for a months.....this is meta-repetiton.

- In a space, like in MTR, sound has kind of structure and repetition can be found in such kind of space.

<-------------------------elevator/people up and down------------------------------->
announcement of MTR - MTR - opening door - people - closing door - MTR take off

Field Recording Journal

Today, windy and rainy. As we planned, I and TC went to Aberdeen for recording the sound around Aberdeen. We date at Lei Tung EST's bus station around 11:15am and we start our recording trip. We went few place:

1. Fish Market

When We arrived around 11:40am, we forgot to buy battery for mic and than we went to Tin Wan for buying the battery for it. Finally, we had electricity for the mic. We started and then there are some guys (they are all workers or fishermen) staring at us. They were curious when they passed by. Well, before the trip, I expacted it will be have some interuption like someone (authority) asking you : "what are you doing here?" YES!!!! one man and one FMO asked about this during the recording. The man seems like a gangster, at fisrt time he just stand beside us and staring at us so hard. We ignored him. Seems he couldn't bear our recroding, and he interupted, and ask us what were we doing. " we are student, we are recording something for our homework." and than, a woman who is FMO, also interupted us and said we can't taking video there, and we said we are jsut recording sound. Well, I think people so afraid something pointing at them like using photo or video camera.

The palce where we standed was just in front of the refrigerator, a very big one for freezing fish and some of the machine not far away. The machine (pumping of water) was non-stop operating and people was yelling with each other and hurring for pick and transoprting their fish in the market. The FMO somtimes passed in front of us and her interphone sometimes automatically speaked out. I pointing the mic to the roof of the market, and there was some echo form the people , market, machine whatever.....

When I think back about this, our position is not good enough. We should stand at the centre of the market, but you know, fishermen often tough and full of anger. And of course, there are some gangs maybe, they will think us we are recording something for police. Maybe I should go there at night, maybe better.

Sea Shore (close to Wan Gwei EST)

We never went there before. At the place, we can see some small oil tanks. Windy, Wavy. Wave were crushing to the shore. The Tanks couldn't stand and going unstable, shaking and shaking. Windy crushed to my face so hard, and the sound seems going to an explosion. There were few ships and boat passed by and finally, they disappeared. Windy ,mainly windy. I really hope that we can use more advanced equipment to reduce the wind and hear mroe clearly to the sound and the environment.

I looked to the sky, closed my eye and listen......

Jumpo Ferry and Jumpo

we were listening the engine speaking loudly and there were some people talking in the ferry. We listened so clearly, what they were talking, what was their emotion wiht the echo of the space. We peeped them.

We continue and we heard some tourist talking. Later on, a HK woman talked to them and asking about their trip.

We were listening and they never know what we hear......

Sea Shore (Sum Wan)

we walked so many steps. We jumped some many rocks. We heard some many ships passing by. We heard the wind.

The engine came form far away and getting closer and closer. I chased them by using my gun and finally, we disappeared......

but there was still the sound, the calm.......and a person fishing on the blue boat.....

::::::

Question:

1. We can imagine the picture when we jsut listening sound, but we can't imagine the actual sound with a clear image.

2. We can record sound in authority place, but we can't shoot anything in the same.

Link: Institude of Sound

http://www.alternativearchive.com/IOS/

Field Recording: Space

http://sweb.cityu.edu.hk/50578309/sound%20from%20space2%20Rendered.mp3

A sound that I made for my final project. This is a piece made by sound from space that I capture on internet. Sound in space is very interesting, the sound, it just like some sound when you playin a very old LP, or maybe you can describ it as "cooking bean" sound. Also, the sound itself seems like you locate in a place that is full of machine.

And, here is one of my virtual field recording of space:

http://sweb.cityu.edu.hk/50578309/field%20recording%20of%20space.mp3

Here is the web page:

http://www.spaceweather.com/glossary/inspire.html

Imagine I'm someone that is thousands of years ago......

Tonight, I went to see my friend's band performance in Central. During the performance, something came up sudeenly. I started to think about people who are thousands of years ago. I'm thinking, when they first to creat sound. Well, no, it is not that way, it is related to what they heard before they try to creat some sound. (seems it is a chicken and egg question), like the sound of thunder and rain.

Music often connected to religion. The music is connected with the assoication and imagination of some sounds in nature like, as I said the sound of thunder. The sound of thunder makes us to think the nature has her own will. Music is kind of conenction with the nature, the god(s) and dead people. I really interested the origin of the music and how the myth that is created that is: we need melody rather than noise or whatever......

Ryoji Ikeda

Ryoji's works often makes me consider his work is minialism. Single tone, high pitch, Montage, Noise. His music is not only for listen, but also the music is a challenge for listener. His pieces, Headphonics, you can't really listen it in a normal places like in public place, but you have to use a headphone to listen and feel the sound. Experiences not just listening.

His live performance is associated with visual elements: not only the video but also the floor of the place. In the live, we never see his presence in front of the audience, he sits in the darkness and operate the mixing of the sound. Personally, the absence of the performer maybe one of the stragtegy of the persentation of the sound and music. The stereotyped live, in a live show, it does has performer(s) in front of the audiences. However, this is myth: who say that performer really need to show up in the live show? The absence of the performer makes us to more concentrate with the sound and visual itself. I think this is truly a Live Show.

Road Show

Road show is one of the thing I hate in Hong Kong. People say that it creats a lot of noise inside the bus. But when you think it more deeply, actually, bus is a place full of noise: the ring tone of people, the talking of people, the engine of the bus and some echos when bus passing though inside the tunnel. Road show often connected to noise and information. Information soemtiems can be a noise if it is really too much. But why do they still enjoy? don't they feel it is trouble? Still now I still can't explain how amazed it is. In this recrod he uses only two instruments: Wave Drum and hurdy gurdy.

Hurdy gurdy is a very old instrument in Europe. Actually, I don't know how it works, but when I hear this instrument, the sound is interesting: the sound is seems prolonging endlessly. You can hear a standard pitch or tone that is not much changes. "Is it Drone? " I'm thinking.

Well, Haino also uses his voice. I know his has some special training (中國氣功吐納法). Voice is kind of instrument. (by the way, it reminds me to think about a guy to perform some classical pieces wiht his own voice, I really forget his name, but seems he is from a group called UB 40.)

Sonic: experiences and thoughts

when I'm trying to trace back the experiences about music, what I firstly to say that is: "I hate music lesson in my secondary 1-3" We were forced to learn what teacher wanted us to learn. At last, I never study any kind of musical instrument.

In my secondary 5, I went to learn bass in a teenage centre. However, and fianlly, I really think that I have NO musical talent. I start to know that I really not that kind of people who can see the note and the lines of the systematic thoery.

The reason for learning bass maybe the passion for musci at that time. Looking back the time of listening music, for me, it really likes a travel or adventure. I went different countries, one of the most exciting countries that is Japan. Japanese music really influences me a lot, not only pop, rock, electronic music, they are really fit to my personal taste. Of course, the most exciting thing is that I discover the PSF record and its artists like Keiji Haino and his different kinds of groups and collabrations. Keiji makes me to think that sound or music can be like that: Voice or even a kind of sound that is prolonging (later, I know that is called Drone). His piece, first/second/third blackness, using his vocie to make some terrrible sound that I can't describ. This kind of experiment of sound really boreden my mind about music and soun or even noise.

For soinc art, we have to have a open mind to listen what we don't listen or willing to listen before. We have to raise the ability of accepting the sound that some myths tells us :" this is not music!"

Yes, all in the openness to talk and discuss about this issue.

Reflection: Emiter.Arszyn - 07.11.05

How can I describe the sound of this duo? Music is going in different layers, and it has its own narrative structure. They takes some of the unwanted sounds in our daily life, such as the noise of some whisphering people. They makeing noise, making some ambient sounds and prolonging some tones. What make me going interested is that, these record is live imprvisation: I really want to be there, to experience the real frequence, the real location and origin of the noise. The present of the performer is really important to me is that, we need someone is making sound, what is performance of sound?
